DESCRIPTION
RHS Awarded for its brilliance as a first early, tasty and delicious pea. A compact, busy, early maturing variety, growing to a height of 60cm. Ready to harvest approximately 60 days from sowing, making it one of the fastest-maturing pea varieties there is. Produces straight, dark green pods, each containing 6–8 sweet, tender peas. A prolific, high-yielding variety, with an abundance of pod production over a short period. The peas are sweet and flavourful, perfect for fresh eating, freezing, or cooking. Good resistance against common pea diseases such as mildew. An all-round fantastic variety to grow!
SOWING INDOORS
Sow February to March into deep pots (2 or 3 seeds per pot), empty cardboard tubes, or gutters. Keep warm and germination should take about 10 days. Transplant outdoors with minimal root disturbance (after frost), about 5cm apart. Leave enough room between rows for harvesting.
SOWING OUTDOORS
Sow directly March to May, approximately 5cm deep and 5cm apart. It’s useful to create a long sowing 'gutter' in the soil and drop the peas in a zigzag pattern. Keep rows spaced about 60cm apart for easy harvesting. Keep well watered throughout the growing season but avoid waterlogging. Stagger sowing every two weeks or so for a continuous crop.
GROWING TIPS
Plants should grow to about 60cm high, sometimes higher. As a compact variety, minimal staking is needed, but light support such as twigs, sticks, or bamboo canes can be helpful. Keep well watered but not waterlogged. Protect young seedlings from mice and wildlife—an empty clear plastic 2L bottle cut at the bottom can help with this. Pick pods regularly to encourage continuous production. Harvest when pods are plump but still tender for best flavour.
