DESCRIPTION
The most aromatic and evocative of herbs, basil truly is the smell of summer. With lush, sweet-scented leaves, beautiful in all summer dishes, especially in salads or sauces with tomatoes. Makes perfect pesto or a fragrant topping for risotto. Very easy to grow, but it doesn’t like the cold. Ideal for a warm windowsill or sunny garden spot.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
Sow seeds from March to July in pots or seed trays at 22–24°C. Prick out tray-sown seedlings into individual 8cm pots when they reach around 6cm tall. For windowsill herbs, pot on once more into a 12cm pot; otherwise, transplant to the growing site. You can also direct sow outdoors in June. Sow in succession throughout the season to ensure a continuous supply of fresh leaves. Harvest individual leaves first, then take full stems from June onwards. Basil flowers are small and white; pinch out flowering stems to encourage more leaf production.
